Phone TipEvery day, I have conversations with people who have no idea that their phone skills leave a lot to be desired. Don't get me wrong, they're polite and professional during our discussion. But then they blow it by hurriedly hanging up, having no idea that what they're doing is an unconscious, impolite, irritating habit. If there were phone police who could secretly observe our business conversations and issue citations for phone etiquette violations, even you, as polite and professional as you are, might be at risk! The number one telephone phone infringement is that people hang up too quickly and too loudly. How many times a day do you hear that strident “click” in your ear? And how often do you think, “Hmmm. That person couldn't wait to get rid of me!” Could it be that you are doing the same to others? Well, it's time to take a stand. What I mean is, stand out from the crowd. Quit being so quick to disconnect: take a moment and hesitate before you hang up. This will distinguish you from just about everyone else in the world who hits that phone cradle with too much speed and not enough self-awareness. If you'd like to put a nice professional touch on your calls, hesitate before you hang up. Take a breath, smile, s-l-o-w-l-y and softly replace the phone on its cradle. The phone police will get off your back and so will I. When you think you're ready, give me a call! |
